JAPANESE TEXT

Ricardo Hernandez uses fabric, string and odds and ends, which miraculously pull together to produce figurative sculpture that has a classical feel to them, that is, sculpture with seriousness and integrity. It is startling to see detritus coalesce convincingly into a visual analogy of human beings, some of them life size, who are engaged in extreme or very personal activities.

That Art Pauvre can be applied to figurative sculpture is surprising. It might be suggested that Hernandez's figures are essentially large rag dolls for adults. There is definitely a macabre element to the figures, a stitched u Frankenstein look to them. The artist, with bits of rags pieced together with cunning and theatrical flair, creates, if not monsters, then certainly very unsetting tableaux.
