Jack Atkinson has, for many years, ardently championed digital output as a
medium that is as rich and responsive to artistic visions as any
conventional medium. The artist paints with his computer by importing a
drawing, adding color and manipulating it until it is a fully realized
artistic statement on canvas.
Atkinson has, in past shows, investigated what he calls the aura or
good-life-spirit in religious / ceremonial objects of diverse cultures and
then
finding that same halo of individuals, always starting with drawings from
life.
In this exhibition the artist extends this inquiry to the secular world of
landscape and still life. That all phenomena possess a spiritual core has
been a concern of Eastern artists as well as Western artists such as
Rembrandt and Van Gogh.
Atkinson convincingly adds a contemporary form to this tradition.
The show includes a section of brush and ink portraits of people he does not
know, done from life on the streets, in the subways or at public gatherings.
